18 seats to the European Parliament

The European Parliament election of 2009 in Bulgaria was held on Sunday 7 June 2009 and was the election of the delegation from Bulgaria to the European Parliament. As a result of the Treaty of Nice - that became active in November 2004 - the number of Bulgarian delegates in the European Parliament decreased from 18 (in 2007) to 17 delegates. If the Treaty of Lisbon is ratified, the number of Bulgarian Delegates would increase to 18.

Background

This election is the first one, in which Bulgaria elects MEP for the full 5-year term. Most political analysts view the European Parliament election of 2009 in Bulgaria as a rehearsal to the Bulgarian parliamentary election, 2009. If similar results are obtained on the latter elections, many claim that the formation of government would be extremely difficult.
